This beautiful comb was hand carved in buffalo bone by local artisans on the island of Timor, made as per ancient techniques with traditional motifs from the area.
Timor has a long tradition of carving objects in bone and horn, using the local materials at hand. Here people have been practicing animism, ancestor and nature-worship since ancient times, something which is incorporated in the carving of ancestral statues, objects and ornamental motifs, as an invitation to the guardian spirits to move into the items, offering protection and guidance.
